You have taken a very positive step by deciding to seek therapy. The outcome of your treatment depends largely on your willingness to engage in this process, which may, at times, result in considerable discomfort. Remembering unpleasant events and becoming aware of feelings attached to those events can bring on strong feelings of anger, depression, anxiety, etc. There are no miracle cures. I cannot promise that your behavior or circumstance will change. I can promise to support you and do my very best to understand you and repeating patterns, as well as to help you clarify what it is that you want for yourself.

My goal is to help people tell their stories (process), own their present (change) and to build resiliency (protection) for future success.

LEVON HUPFER, MA, LAC, MAC

Allied Professional Member, American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy

The Elton John song, Levon is what I'm named after, but I was not born on a Christmas day. I was born in Denver, and raised by my mother in north Denver where I learned to love football and school from a young age.

My grandpa and Nana were huge influences in my life, teaching me by example that whether in the midst of a Nazi POW camp, or at the Brown Palace Hotel, we should always ‘count our blessings!’

I attended school in Virginia where I studied Religion and then eventually Marriage & Family Studies. I met my magnificent wife in college, and we built a life in Colorado.

During college I began working at an acute residential treatment center for children where I found my calling in life helping families deal with crisis and hurt. I then spent the next 14 years helping teens and families in the highest levels of care. It was during this time I also began doing couples counseling and family therapy, and focused on becoming licensed as an addiction counselor. I spent 10 years working for the District Attorney as a Director and Senior Advisor working on policy transformation, alternative sentencing, employee wellbeing and diversion. My practice focuses on consulting, couples therapy, trauma and mental health work, and addiction counseling. I also lecture at Colorado State University in the Graduate Department of Psychology training soon to be therapists & researchers.

In consultation I help executives, law enforcement organizations, companies and faith organizations understand their needs, blind spots, and risks and develop strategies to move forward using evidenced based practices found in Motivational Interviewing, Lean methodology and project management.

I am a systems therapist rooted in attachment science who utilizes Whitaker's experiential approach, EMDR, and EFT as my philosophical basis of counseling. I regularly use Narrative, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapies; Dialectical Behavioral Skills; Bibliotherapy (reading, writing, journaling).

Dr. Kevin McCauley, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, Dr. Nora Volkow, Dr. Bruce Perry, Dr. Sue Johnson, Jean Armour, and Dr. Brene Brown have significantly influenced my thoughts about the healing profession, and my practice. I am in training for EMDR. I incorporate nutrition, wellness, brain science & the client's spiritual disciplines into my practice if they so choose.

I offer in person sessions in Commerce City/Reunion, or Telehealth.

EXPERT CARE DESIGNED FOR YOU

COUPLES & MARRIAGE COUNSELING

Our journey of togetherness and oneness might begin with an event, but the process takes a lifetime. Intimacy with another person begets conflict and if that conflict is not done in a high trust, open relationship, the tension and strife that occurs is sometimes unbearable. Throw in all the challenges of modern life, parenting, careers, health and sometimes it's just too much. Couples work is often the most meaningful work for me because of my own journey to build a lasting loving marriage with my incredible and passionate wife. It takes work, but the reward far outweighs the price.

TRAUMA & MENTAL HEALTH THERAPY

Anything that happens to you that you have not been able to process or digest in your mind is held in the brain and body as a trauma and can cause distress and other symptoms for you.

In addition, we all have adverse childhood experiences that can effect our mind and body. The more adverse experiences the more difficult it may be to deal with them now or later in life.

If you have gone through an event such as abuse, combat, auto accident, etc., sometimes memories or associations from those events get 'stuck' in your brain, and therapy can help tremendously with that.

ADDICTION HELP

Substance abuse is a struggle for many Americans. Those who end up battling the disease of addiction are in need of expert care and precise treatment.  As a disease that captures our will, this one is complicated by our societal beliefs, decades of failed approaches to helping people, and a reliance on what we think is best versus what science is teaching us. Addictions are almost always present with other trauma or mental health struggles. I combine a systems approach to help you understand that healthy connection is the goal of addiction treatment, not saying 'no' to certain compulsions and behaviors. I treat pornography, gambling and other addictions as well. I can complete substance use evaluations and assessments.

CONSULTATION

Consultation provides you with the opportunity to process, discuss and ask specific questions about topics about which I may have expertise in and deepen your knowledge of various aspects of clinical or non clinical work. Consultation is NOT supervision and it is NOT psychotherapy.

I offer consultation in the areas of - Leadership, Strategy, Systems, Process Improvement, Risk Analysis, Development of Policies and Procedures, Criminal Justice, Juvenile Justice, Behavioral Health, Residential and Outpatient Treatment, Crisis Management, Law Enforcement and Policy.

~The Velveteen Rabbit

“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.”
“Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit.
“Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.”
“Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?”
“It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

HEALING STORIES

What Former Clients Have To Say ...

"Levon is honest and to the point. He won't waste your time and I really appreciate that. You can tell he really wants to help."

Matt

"When I learned that I didn't just wake up every morning and intentionally try to anger everyone around me and ruin my life, but that I had a disease - everything changed."

Avery

"We learned so much from our couples work with Levon. It was tough, but the right thing at the right time for us!"
